Ah, the loys of the country!! We had something trying to build a home under the garage.
So I borrowed a live trap from the neighbor about a week ago to see if we can take care of this problem. Our guess was a groundhog...

Well, a couple days later after being gone for two days I find a lovely little racoon in the trap.

No problem, I've had those before. Took it out back and ...ummm... released it. Yeah released it... to the never world...

Oh well.. no ASPCA whiners here!

Reset the trap and woke up this morning to a new resident in the trap.. A SKUNK!!!!

Oh Shit, now what do I do.. Looked it up on the internet (try it, there are some good stories!) and confered with my neighbor.
He had no idea and said that was a huge fear of his.. If I catch a skunk, now what?
Well, dammit, I did!

After reading a bit of the impending horror and making sure I had enough Peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap ready.
I headed out to deal with our friend..

I gently covered the trap witha sheet. He remained calm. I wish I could say the same for myself. I am pretty sure I was hyperventilating at this point.
Next I gently lifted the trap into my garden card. Man, for a little guy he sure was heavy. (Didn't know until later that there was about 10 lbs. of sand in the trap too...

Whew.. no spray yet. Once the trap was in the cart... I took a break since I had spots in front of my eyes due to lake of oxygen!

Next agently wheeled the cart to the back of the property by hand, singing lullabys the whole way. Heck, they calm my kid and me, maybe they will calm a skunk!!
Once I reached the back of the property, now what? OK, truth be told at this point with racoons and the like, my catch and release program involves my .22 rifle, but after my morning discussion with the neighbor I was still undecided on what to do..

Every see a dead skunk and have it smell like roses?? I haven't!

Well, I decided to release it. I gently pulled back the sheet that was still covering the trap, and slowly released the latch and opened the door on the trap. I then propped the door open with a stick...

and RAN like a little kid the other direction.. In my rear view mirror I noticed that the sknunk did the same thing!!

Disaster averted.. I did the Icky shuffle touchdown dance... and came home...

I am still the Great Hunter! Critters beware!

Cheers
